2026 Hyundai SUVs Ranked by Towing Capacity in Ontario
Posted on July 8, 2026

Towing capacity is one of the first numbers shoppers ask about, and for good reason. A boat, a pop-up camper or a utility trailer full of mulch each carries a different weight, and the SUV you pick has to handle it with margin to spare. The 2026 Hyundai SUV lineup covers that spread with ratings that run from 2,000 lbs (907 kg) all the way up to 5,000 lbs (2,268 kg) when properly equipped.
What sets the lineup apart is choice. Hyundai offers towing-capable SUVs with a V6, a turbocharged hybrid, a plug-in hybrid and fully electric powertrains, so you do not have to trade family comfort, technology or fuel efficiency for a usable hitch rating. This guide ranks every 2026 Hyundai SUV by maximum towing capacity, then looks at what each one offers beyond the number.

1 (tie). Palisade 3.5L V6: 5,000 lbs (2,268 kg)
The all-new 2026 Palisade with the 3.5L V6 sits at the top of the lineup with a 5,000 lbs (2,268 kg) rating when properly equipped. The engine produces 287 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque through an 8-speed automatic, and HTRAC all-wheel drive is standard, with drive modes plus Snow, Mud and Sand terrain settings. Tow Mode and Trailer Sway Control are standard across the lineup, and an integrated tow hitch with cover is available.
Seating is offered in 8-passenger and 7-passenger layouts, and cargo capacity reaches 2,455 L behind the first row. For rougher launch ramps and trailheads, the XRT Pro trim raises minimum ground clearance to 212 mm (8.3 in) from the standard 187 mm (7.4 in) and adds all-terrain tires. The 2026 Palisade is the AJAC Canadian Utility Vehicle of the Year and the North American Utility Vehicle of the Year.
1 (tie). IONIQ 9 AWD: 5,000 lbs (2,268 kg)
The all-new IONIQ 9 proves that a three-row electric SUV can match the V6 Palisade at 5,000 lbs (2,268 kg) when properly equipped. The all-wheel-drive versions produce 303 hp or 422 hp from their dual-motor setups, drawing on a 110.3 kWh battery. The Essential rear-wheel-drive trim is rated at 3,500 lbs (1,587 kg), and a trailer preparation package is available on select trims.
Electric range is the other half of the story: up to 515 km for the Preferred AWD and 500 km for the AWD Performance, with a 350 kW Level 3 fast charge taking 24 minutes. Cargo capacity is the largest in the lineup at 2,462 L behind the front seats, and exterior Vehicle-to-Load capability lets you power camp gear from the battery.
3. Palisade Hybrid: 4,000 lbs (1,814 kg)
The new Palisade Hybrid is the headline addition for 2026, pairing a 2.5L turbocharged engine with an electric motor for 329 hp combined and 339 lb-ft of torque. It tows 4,000 lbs (1,814 kg) when properly equipped while returning 8.1 L/100 km combined, which is a rare mix for a three-row SUV of this size. With a 69 L fuel tank, that works out to roughly 850 km of estimated combined-cycle range between fill-ups.
4. Tucson 2.5L: 3,500 lbs (1,588 kg)
The compact Tucson with the 2.5L engine is rated at 3,500 lbs (1,588 kg) when properly equipped, a capacity increase for 2026 that puts it ahead of most compact SUVs. Output is 187 hp and 178 lb-ft through an 8-speed automatic, and HTRAC all-wheel drive is standard on every 2026 Tucson. Trailer pre-wiring and Trailer Sway Assist are standard, and the cargo hold offers 1,095 L behind the rear seats and 2,119 L with them folded. Combined fuel consumption is 8.8 L/100 km.
5. IONIQ 5: 2,698 lbs (1,224 kg)
The IONIQ 5 tows 2,698 lbs (1,224 kg) when properly equipped, enough for a small utility or teardrop trailer. Its 84.0 kWh battery delivers up to 504 km of range in rear-wheel-drive form and 463 km with all-wheel drive, and a 350 kW Level 3 fast charge takes 18 minutes. Cargo capacity is 745 L with the rear seats up and 1,655 L with them down.
6 (tie). Santa Fe Hybrid and Tucson Hybrid: 2,000 lbs (907 kg)
Both of Hyundai’s turbocharged hybrid SUVs are rated at 2,000 lbs (907 kg) when properly equipped, which covers a small boat, a jet ski or a single-axle utility trailer. The Santa Fe Hybrid produces 231 hp and 271 lb-ft, seats up to seven, holds 2,267 L behind the first row and returns 6.9 L/100 km combined. The Tucson Hybrid matches that 231 hp output and returns 6.7 L/100 km combined, while the Tucson Plug-in Hybrid raises output to 268 hp and adds 51 km of all-electric range.
Key hybrid towing advantages:
- Standard HTRAC all-wheel drive on both models
- Standard Trailer Sway Assist and trailer pre-wiring
- Hybrid torque from low rpm for easier starts on a grade
Which 2026 Hyundai SUV Should You Tow With?
Match the vehicle to the trailer. For a 4,000 lbs (1,814 kg) travel trailer or a mid-size boat, the Palisade V6, Palisade Hybrid or IONIQ 9 AWD gives you headroom and three rows of seating. For weekend loads under 3,500 lbs (1,588 kg), the Tucson 2.5L delivers the most towing per litre of fuel in a compact footprint. For light trailers with the lowest running costs, the Santa Fe Hybrid, Tucson Hybrid and IONIQ 5 cover the 2,000 to 2,698 lbs (907 to 1,224 kg) range.
